El mismo estudio de televisión de la NBC desde donde cada sábado se emite Saturday Night Live (un show con más de 35 años de historia en pleno corazón de Manhattan), fue el escenario elegido por Microsoft para hacer el que será, seguramente, su lanzamiento mundial más importante del año: el Office 2010. El nuevo paquete de programas de oficina viene a reemplazar a la edición 2007, con la consigna principal de que quienes lo usen puedan, desde ahora, trabajar con sus documentos, casi sin distinciones, desde la PC, el celular e Internet. Sin embargo, tal vez la novedad más importante del nuevo Office para los usuarios hogareños sea que ofrecerá dos versiones gratis. Una, a través de Internet; la otra estará incluida en las computadoras nuevas que traigan Windows como sistema operativo.
Office Web Applications (el Office en la Web) puede leerse como la respuesta de Microsoft a Google, sus softs de oficina online Google Docs, y su discurso a favor de la computación "en la nube" (en Internet).
Para usar el Office 2010 en Internet alcanzará con ser usuario de una cuenta Microsoft Live (lo que significa, básicamente, tener un webmail "@hotmail.com" o "@live.com"), y no será necesario tener Office instalado en la PC. En la versión web del Office estarán, con limitaciones, el procesador de textos Word, la planilla de cálculos Excel, el soft de presentaciones PowerPoint y el de notas OneNote. Según los voceros de Microsoft, con ellos será posible editar documentos que se suban desde la propia computadora, o crear nuevos, y todos se podrán guardar online en SkyDrive (el almacenamiento virtual que Microsoft ofrece a los usuarios de sus productos web), o bajarse al disco rígido propio. La habilitación de las aplicaciones web de Office será paulatina pero, según Microsoft, en los próximos seis meses todos los poseedores de cuentas Live contarán con ellas.
A su vez, los miembros de empresas que compren Office 2010 y lo monten en servidores propios, también podrán acceder a Office desde Internet, con menos limitaciones y sin ver publicidad.
Por otra parte, en los próximos meses, las nuevas PC, notebooks y netbooks que se vendan con un sistema operativo de Microsoft, incluirán una versión reducida del Office 2010 (se llamará Office 2010 Starter). En este caso el paquete constará sólo de Word y Excel, que tendrán funciones recortadas y publicidad, pero serán gratis y no tendrán fecha de caducidad. Esas máquinas también tendrán cargadas las versiones completas del Office, pero para activarlas será necesario comprar la licencia.
Desde ayer, ya están disponibles las versiones para empresas. Y en algunas semanas llegarán las pensadas para el hogar, los profesionales y las pymes. La versión Hogar y Estudiantes (Word, Excel, PowerPoint y OneNote) costará unos cien dólares. Mientras que el Office 2010 Hogar y Empresas (suma Outlook) tendrá un precio que rondará los 200 dólares.
