"El primer día del resto de tu vida" repasa cinco días decisivos en la vida de un matrimonio y sus tres hijos, repartidos a lo largo de doce años. Cada uno de los días de la película corresponde a un miembro de la familia, cuyos pasos se siguen de la mañana a la noche. Un hijo que se marcha del hogar familiar; una adolescente a punto de perder la virginidad que entra en conflicto con su madre; a su vez, en el umbral de una crisis, un padre que ya no le dirige la palabra a uno de sus hijos, mientras que el otro vive inmerso en sus fantasías amorosas; es la realidad de esta peculiar familia.
